Gray's history

Founded by John Gray, Gray's School of Art opened on the 16th November 1885 in Schoolhill, Aberdeen. In its first year, the school had 60 students enrolled in day classes and 189 in evening classes.

In 1966 a gradual increase in numbers necessitated a move from Schoolhill to the current riverside site of Garthdee. Aberdeen trained Architect Michael Shewan designed a new building in which he paid homage in steel and glass to the architect Mies van der Rohe.

In the 135 years that have passed since its opening, the school continues to adapt to industrial and technological change. Led by a teaching philosophy which nurtures student partnership and matched by its committed staff, students are provided with the knowledge, opportunity and skill to unleash their creative potential.
